Manage the Queue, Nip the abuse in the bud

CST's low-cost, effective MediCall paging systems help NHS control its patients

Taking the wait (and the stress) out of NHS waiting areas

"Patients are given a CST MediCall pager as they book-in to the waiting area, leaving them free to go and get a snack, visit the shop or wait quietly outside, confident in the knowledge that they will not lose their place in the queue."

Unfortunately the physical and verbal abuse of NHS staff is on the increase and it's not only lone workers who are at risk. Inside hospitals staff in A and E departments and other waiting areas often have to cope with exceedingly agitated patients.

Dr John Reid, when Secretary of State for Health, pledged to do everything within his powers to stop NHS staff suffering from violence and abuse. Funds have been released to protect staff and ensure a fast response to a violent situation, using technology such as Identicom.

However, it's often both more effective and cheaper to address the causes of abuse rather than having to deal with the results.

One flash point is during the inevitable wait to be seen by medical staff. Already stressed patients and staff are often at loggerheads and the situation can escalate out of control. A cost-effective solution to protect staff and placate patients is to manage the queue. This can prevent tempers getting frayed and actually stop the abuse before it starts.

The MediCall paging system from Call-Systems Technology (CST) is a simple, low-cost option that takes the waiting out of waiting. Most important of all, it works. CST's Sales Director Ashley Sheppard explains: "Patients are given a MediCall pager as they book- in, leaving them free to go and get a snack, visit the shop, explore elsewhere or wait quietly outside - confident in the knowledge that they will not lose their place in the queue."

At the appropriate time, with the touch of a button, staff can send a message to the pager, which instantly and discreetly alerts the waiting party to return to the relevant department. "The system is easy to administer, with little staff training required, and doesn't demand a huge capital investment to get it up and running," adds Sheppard.

The pagers are large enough so that patients won't forget them in their pocket, but small enough to be discreet. They are tough, durable and reliable, little maintenance is required and running costs are negligible. Since MediCall is a wireless system, installation is fast, easy and unobtrusive and its UHF technology ensures effective coverage without effecting medical equipment. And it is very competitively priced.
