Smith walked into Sittingbourne Memorial Hospital pharmacy at 16:00 GMT on February 18th and tried to fill a blue carrier bag with temazepam, the paper stated.
He was carrying a knife in his left hand.
When staff told Smith they did not keep drugs of that sort on site he ran off.
Police arrested him 20 minutes later at his home.
Investigating officer PC Kath Earle told the news provider: "This was a thorough and professional investigation by the criminal investigation team at Sittingbourne Police Station, supported by uniformed patrols.
"Thanks to officers' local knowledge and quick response the offender was in custody the same afternoon."
He was sentenced to four years for attempted robbery.
Staff can be protected against instances such as these with CST's Bosch Personal Security mobiles.
CCTV and Access Control from Security Systems Technology are also effective means of monitoring patient access to different wards and departments. Access Control, which has been mooted as a security solution in the past, could boost patient, as well as worker, safety.
