Providing Reliable Site-Wide Emergency Communication

Airbus Helicopters provides a comprehensive range of civil and military helicopters used for critical missions around the world. Its helicopters support first responders, firefighters, public service operators and military customers, with applications including medical and humanitarian missions, rescue operations and firefighting. Safety is a key priority for Airbus Helicopters, both in the design of its products and in their operation.

Project Overview

With a large and varied manufacturing environment to consider, Airbus Helicopters required a dependable way of communicating emergency alerts to trained first aid personnel throughout the facility.

Call Systems Technology (CST) was appointed to supply and install a wireless First Aider Emergency Call Point System, enabling rapid notification when assistance is required.

Strategically positioned throughout the facility, the system gives employees and visitors an accessible way to summon assistance, while supporting trained first aiders in responding to incidents across the site.

The Challenge

The Airbus Helicopters facility combines office areas with extensive production spaces used for helicopter assembly, as well as external areas incorporating helicopter landing zones.

This created several challenges when designing the emergency communication system. The scale of the facility and differences in building construction could affect wireless signal performance, while the system also needed to provide dependable coverage beyond the main building.

Emergency call points therefore needed to be positioned strategically throughout the site, with a communication network capable of reliably reaching first aid personnel across both internal and external areas.

Developing the Solution

CST developed a wireless emergency communication solution around strategically positioned call points, portable paging devices and enhanced radio coverage.

The installed system included:

Emergency internal and external first aider call points installed throughout office, production and helicopter landing areas.

CST W8001 pagers carried by trained first aid personnel, providing immediate notification when an emergency call point is activated.

An AlarmCall™ Lite Plus repeater to enhance radio coverage and ensure reliable signal performance throughout the facility.

The system was installed and commissioned before comprehensive signal testing was undertaken across the facility. Testing covered both the internal manufacturing and office areas and the external landing zones, helping to verify reliable wireless communication throughout the required coverage areas.

The Outcome

The completed system provides Airbus Helicopters with a dedicated emergency communication network tailored to the practical requirements of a large manufacturing environment.

Key benefits include:

The AlarmCall™ Lite Plus repeater plays an important role in maintaining reliable radio communication across the site, helping to address the coverage challenges associated with the size and construction of the facility.

Looking Ahead

The completed installation gives Airbus Helicopters a reliable means of connecting emergency call points with trained first aid personnel across its manufacturing site.

By combining accessible emergency call points, portable wireless paging and enhanced radio coverage, CST has delivered a solution that supports Airbus Helicopters' wider commitment to workplace safety, giving employees and visitors greater confidence that assistance can be requested promptly when it is needed.
