The Cumberland London, formerly known as the Hard Rock Hotel, is one of the capital’s landmark properties. Located at Marble Arch, the hotel features over 400 guest rooms, multiple restaurants and bars, extensive conference spaces, and five basement levels.
The scale and complexity of such a large, multi-level site required a carefully engineered approach to ensure seamless safety coverage and clear communication across every area of the building.
Since 2021, our team has been delivering advanced communication and alarm systems to hospitality venues across the UK. The Cumberland project represents one of our most extensive and technically sophisticated installations.
Project Scope
To design, supply, and install a fully integrated safety and communication system that provides reliable coverage throughout the entire building for fire alarm messaging, staff communication, and emergency assistance, meeting the latest BS 5839 standards.
Systems Installed:
Gen2 Alarm Monitoring and Messaging Software
The Gen2 Queue software forms an integral part of a comprehensive safety and communication system. It provides a monitoring solution that receives addressable alerts over a fully monitored wireless network and compliant with BS 5839-1 for safety and reliability. The system is entirely wireless and continuously monitored. It includes a robust reporting and management suite, offering detailed reports and advanced filters that allow users to locate critical information quickly and efficiently.
Fire Alarm & Messaging Systems
To meet the needs of such a large property, AlarmCall network units were installed throughout the hotel.
The AlarmCall system provides powerful, reliable communication with upgraded 4W output and fast data transfer. It allows high-speed, long-range control and two-way messaging, making it ideal for busy hospitality environments.
Key Features:
- Direct DMR messaging to staff radios
- Transmission of paging and telemetry data
- Repeater mode for areas with weaker signals
- Fault detection and antenna monitoring
- Integrated links to disabled toilet alarms and the BMS
To further enhance coverage and network resilience across the multi-level site, AlarmCall Pro+ was introduced. Acting as a secure IoT gateway, it supports both paging and DMR messaging with a robust 4W transmitter, perfect for large or complex buildings. The system is fully compliant with BS 5839-1:2025 standards.
Radio Communications Network
A comprehensive radio communication network was deployed to support daily operations and staff safety throughout the hotel.
The system includes over 100 radios, ensuring smooth, reliable communication between departments. A powerful repeater and antenna system guarantees strong signal coverage across all guest areas, conference spaces, and even the deepest basement levels (down to -5).
The radios receive addressable fire alarm messages, providing instant alerts for key staff members. Each radio is equipped with built-in safety features, including:
- Lone worker monitoring - alerts others if a user is inactive for a set period
- Fall detection - automatically sends an alert if a fall or impact occurs
- Panic alarm button - allows staff to call for immediate assistance
Dedicated channels are used by different teams to keep communication clear and efficient. For example, some radios are allocated to the restaurant, while others serve conference, housekeeping, and maintenance operations.
This setup ensures constant, building-wide communication and rapid emergency response, helping staff stay safe and always connected.
The power of modern wireless technology
This project illustrates the power of modern wireless technology to elevate safety, communication, and operational confidence in large, complex hospitality settings. Through strategic planning, seamless integration, and robust equipment, we enabled The Cumberland London to achieve full-site coverage, faster response times, and greater peace of mind for both staff and guests.
