Have you ever experienced the annoyance of a false fire alarm?

If so, you are part of the overwhelming majority. A recent study by the Home Office revealed that a staggering 98% of automatic fire alarm incidents turn out to be false.

From a firefighters’ perspective, these false calls are not merely frustrating inconveniences. In reality, they significantly divert resources away from genuine emergencies where lives are at stake and every second counts. The false alarms occur extremely frequently, causing staff to become complacent, undermining the severity and being less inclined to react immediately when the alarm rings. Not only does this strain the valuable emergency services, but it puts everyone’s life at risk too.

In response to the challenges associated with the high volume of calls, the London Fire Brigade has decided it is time to take action. During daytime hours, that is between 7am-8:30pm, they will no longer attend automatic fire alarms in most of London’s commercial and non-residential premises, except if they receive confirmation of a real fire. This change will be established from October, optimising resource allocation and improving response times for actual fires.
